Abstract:

Observations have shown that a large majority of stars form in star clusters, and that most form in binary or multiple systems. In order to understand star formation, is it of crucial importance to recover the outcome of star formation, i.e., the properties of the newly formed stellar population. This is not an easy task, as dynamical interactions and stellar evolution have altered the binary population since formation. Observational selection effects associated with surveys for stellar multiplicity introduce further complications. In this talk, I will discuss the properties of the IMF and the primordial binary population, their relation to star formation, and how observations can be used to constrain the star formation process.
