Abstract:
During cosmological structure formation galaxies merge. How do the central supermassive black holes (SMBH), ubiquitous in galaxies, get close to each other in a post-merger galactic nucleus? Do they ultimately coalesce under emission of gravitational waves? Some new answers to these questions will be presented, obtained by direct N-body modelling on new special supercomputers. We have recently shown that the stalling or last parsec problem can be overcome if the galactic nucleus is not spherically symmetric. In a series of new results obtained with the cutting edge special supercomputers using graphical processing units (GPU) at the Institute for Process Engineering of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing we will see that our previous results are robust and that also for the case of unequal black hole masses there is no stalling problem and black holes can coalesce in cosmologically short time scales of some 100 million years.
